After the Windows 11 23H2 update, Copilot disappeared from the taskbar on many PCs, including mine. In this video tutorial, I show you all the methods I tried to enable the missing Copilot on Windows 11 23H2, the one that worked, and how to disable Copilot again if you change your mind.
Update (October 2026): This guide is for the Copilot preview sidebar in Windows 11 23H2 (November 2023). In 2024, Microsoft replaced that sidebar with a separate Copilot app, so the ViVeTool feature IDs below are only useful on 23H2. Also note that Windows 11 23H2 Home and Pro stopped receiving security updates on November 11, 2025. To move to a supported version, see How to Install Windows 11 26H2 (Official Release).

Why Copilot is missing after the 23H2 update
Microsoft disabled Copilot on some PCs on purpose because of a problem with multiple monitors. In the release notes of the October 31, 2023 update, Microsoft writes:
To prevent users from encountering this issue, Copilot in Windows (in preview) might not be available on devices that have been used or are currently being used in a multimonitor configuration.
Read more in the official Microsoft post. I use two monitors, so Copilot was gone on my PC too.
According to the same Microsoft page, this multi-monitor problem was later fixed for Windows 11 22H2 and 23H2 on devices with updates released on January 9, 2024, or later.
Method 1: Turn on the Copilot button in the Registry Editor
- Click Start, type Registry Editor, right-click it and select Run as administrator.
- Go to this key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced - Find the value ShowCopilotButton and double-click it. Set Value data to 1 and click OK.
- If the value does not exist, right-click an empty area, select New > DWORD (32-bit) Value, name it ShowCopilotButton and set it to 1.
Method 2: Check the Group Policy setting
The Group Policy Editor is available in Windows 11 Pro, Education and Enterprise.
- Click Start, search for Edit group policy and open it.
- Go to User Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Windows Copilot.
- Double-click Turn off Windows Copilot. If it is set to Enabled, Copilot is turned off. Set it to Not Configured and click OK.
- Restart your computer.
Note: On my PC, methods 1 and 2 were not enough, and Copilot was still missing after the restart. Method 3 brought it back.
Method 3: Enable Copilot on Windows 11 using ViVeTool (works)
ViVeTool is a free, open-source tool that turns hidden Windows features on and off.
Direct Download ViVeTool 0.3.3
- Open the GitHub releases page and download ViVeTool-v0.3.3.zip (or use the direct download button above).
- Double-click the ZIP file to open it in File Explorer and click Extract all.
- Copy the extracted folder to your C: drive. This keeps the path short.
- Click Start, type cmd, right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Type the following command to go to the ViVeTool folder and press Enter. Change the path if your folder has a different name or location:
cd C:\ViVeTool-v0.3.3 - Type the following command to enable Copilot in the taskbar and press Enter:
vivetool /enable /id:44774629,44776738,44850061,42105254,41655236 - When you see that the configuration was set successfully, restart the computer.
After the restart, the Copilot button is back in the taskbar.
Show or hide the Copilot button
Right-click the taskbar, select Taskbar settings and, under Taskbar items, turn Copilot (preview) on or off. This only hides the button. It does not disable Copilot.
Disable Copilot on Windows 11 using ViVeTool
- Open Command Prompt as administrator and go to the ViVeTool folder:
cd C:\ViVeTool-v0.3.3 - Remember to change the path if your folder is somewhere else.
- Type the following command to disable Copilot in the taskbar and press Enter:
vivetool /disable /id:44774629,44776738,44850061,42105254,41655236 - Restart the computer.
Disable Copilot with Group Policy or the Registry
- Group Policy: go to User Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Windows Copilot, open Turn off Windows Copilot and set it to Enabled.
- Registry Editor: go to
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advancedand set ShowCopilotButton to 0.
