How to Downgrade a Premiere Pro Project

  1. Open the Premiere Pro Project Online Downgrader with the button above.
  2. Click Select Project File, or drag and drop your .prproj file onto the page.
  3. The converted file downloads automatically. It gets .downgraded in its name, for example yourproject.downgraded.prproj. Your original file is never changed.
  4. Open the downgraded file in your older version of Premiere Pro.

Many thanks to our friends at https://downgrader.elements.tv/, who created the original online Premiere Pro downgrade converter.

Note: Downgrading can’t guarantee that everything works in an older version. For example, elements.tv warns that edits made with the newer Type Tool are lost in Premiere Pro CC 2017 and older.

How the Downgrade Works

A Premiere project (.prproj) file is basically an XML file wrapped in gzip compression. One of the nodes contains a version number that matches the version of Premiere that created it. Premiere checks this number when it opens a file. It refuses to open anything saved with a newer version, even when the project is basically compatible: “This project was saved in a newer version of Adobe Premiere Pro and cannot be opened in this version.”

A downgrader simply changes that version number and creates a new gzip-compressed file that Premiere can read. You can do the same process yourself manually, as described here, but a tool makes it simple.

Warning: Because this is a cheat, some filters and effects may be lost when converting.

Another Tool: Josh Cluderay’s Downgrader

If the first tool doesn’t work for your project, try the Premiere Project Downgrader by Josh Cluderay. It works the same way: it sets the version number in your project to “1”, so any older version of Premiere can open it.

Note: This tool’s page used to say that it couldn’t convert Premiere 2021 or 2022 projects yet. That note is no longer on its page (checked October 2026), but if the conversion fails, use the XML method below.

Another Solution That May Work for You: Export to XML

If the downgraded project shows the error “The project could not be loaded, it may be damaged or contain outdated elements”, try this method. A viewer followed the video, got this message and fixed it like this:

  1. Open the project in your new Premiere Pro version (his was 2024).
  2. Go to File > Export > Final Cut Pro XML and save the file. You don’t need to change anything.
  3. Open your old Premiere Pro version (his was 2020).
  4. Go to File > Open Project and open the XML file.

That’s it. When he opened the XML file, Premiere 2020 lagged for a few seconds and then worked normally. Another reader also confirmed in the comments that the XML method works.

    1. That’s good news, Joseph, thanks for confirming. The XML route is the most reliable option when the downgrader can’t handle a newer project, just check your effects and titles afterwards, since some of them don’t carry over in the XML.
