Set Up a Business Account on Instagram

On Instagram, you can switch your personal profile to a free business account. A business account gives you features that help your business grow, such as Instagram Insights and contact buttons on your profile. Here is how to switch in the current Instagram app, and in the older version of the app from 2020.

Before you switch

  • Your profile becomes public. If your personal account is private, switching to a professional account makes it public, and all pending follow requests are accepted automatically.
  • One Facebook Page only. You can connect your business account to a Facebook Page, but only one Page at a time.

How to switch to a business account in the current Instagram app

  1. Go to your profile and tap the menu (☰) in the upper right corner to open Settings and activity.
  2. Under For professionals, tap Account type and tools.
  3. Tap Switch to professional account and choose the category that best describes your business.
  4. Tap Switch to professional account again, choose Business and tap Next.
  5. Follow the remaining steps on the screen. You can add your contact information and, if you want, connect a Facebook Page.

Note: Instagram changes its menus from time to time, so the names can be slightly different in your version of the app.

How to switch in older versions of Instagram

In the 2020 version of the app, the steps were:

  1. Go to your profile and tap Instagram menu icon with three lines in the upper right corner.
  2. Tap Instagram settings gear icon Settings.
  3. Tap Account.
  4. Tap Switch to Professional Account.
  5. Tap Business.
  6. If you like, follow the steps to connect your business account to a Facebook Page of your business. This step is optional, and it makes it easier to use all the business features across the Facebook family of apps.
  7. Add details, like your business category and contact information.
  8. Tap Done.

What you get with a business account

With a business account, you can use business features and Instagram Insights. These tools help you understand who engages with your business on Instagram.

Show or hide your category and contact information

You can choose whether your business category and contact information are visible on your profile. After the setup, go to your profile and tap Edit Profile. Under Public Business Information, open Profile Display and choose what to show or hide. Then tap Done.

Want to go back?

You can switch back at any time. I explain how in this guide: switch back to a personal Instagram account from a business account.
