Why Did OneDrive Delete My Desktop Files?

OneDrive can automatically sync the files in your Desktop, Documents and Pictures folders to the cloud. When you turn off this backup or unlink your PC from OneDrive, Windows stops showing those files on your desktop. Instead, they stay inside the OneDrive folder on your computer and in the cloud.

Common Reasons Your Desktop Files Disappeared

  • You turned off OneDrive backup for the Desktop folder.
  • You unlinked OneDrive from your PC without restoring the files first.
  • OneDrive moved your files to the cloud, so they no longer appear on your local desktop.

Where Are My Desktop Files Now?

Even though the files seem to be deleted, they are usually still in your OneDrive folder on your PC. Here is how to find them:

  1. Open File Explorer (press Windows + E).
  2. Go to C:\Users\YourUsername\OneDrive\Desktop.
  3. Check whether your missing files are there.

Note: Replace YourUsername with your Windows user name. With a work or school account, the folder may be called OneDrive – CompanyName instead of just OneDrive.

How to Bring Back Your Desktop Files

Method 1: Move the Files Back to the Desktop Manually

  1. Open File Explorer and go to C:\Users\YourUsername\OneDrive\Desktop.
  2. Select all your files (Ctrl + A), right-click and choose Cut.
  3. Go to C:\Users\YourUsername\Desktop.
  4. Right-click and choose Paste to restore all your files.

Tip: If you are not sure, choose Copy instead of Cut. Your files then also stay in OneDrive as a backup. If some files show a small cloud icon, they are stored only online. Right-click them and choose Always keep on this device first, and wait until they are downloaded.

Method 2: Turn OneDrive Backup Back On

If you want your files to appear on the desktop again automatically:

  1. Click the OneDrive icon in the system tray (next to the clock).
  2. Click Help & Settings > Settings.
  3. Under Sync and backup, click Manage backup.
  4. Turn on the backup for Desktop, Documents and Pictures.
  5. Click Save changes and wait for OneDrive to restore your files.

If you don’t want OneDrive to manage your desktop files anymore, unlink it properly:

  1. First make sure every file is downloaded to your PC: right-click the OneDrive folder in File Explorer and choose Always keep on this device.
  2. Open the OneDrive settings from the system tray.
  3. Go to Account > Unlink this PC.
  4. If OneDrive asks what to do with your files, choose to keep them on this PC.
  5. After unlinking, your files stay on your PC and are no longer synced to OneDrive. If they are not on your desktop, move them back with Method 1.

Still Missing? Check the OneDrive Recycle Bin

If the files are not in your OneDrive folder either, they may have been deleted from OneDrive. Go to onedrive.com, sign in, select Recycle bin, select your files and click Restore. Microsoft keeps deleted files for 30 days with a personal account and for 93 days with a work or school account (unless your administrator changed it). See Microsoft’s guide: Restore files deleted from your OneDrive.

If the files were permanently deleted, a data recovery tool may still find them. See how to recover deleted files with EaseUS Data Recovery Wizard.

How to Prevent This in the Future

To avoid losing access to your desktop files again, follow these best practices:

  • Don’t keep too many files on your desktop. Move them to the D: drive or another local folder for better performance.
  • Back up your important files regularly instead of relying only on OneDrive.
  • Adjust your OneDrive settings so it doesn’t sync your desktop automatically unless you need it.

Summary

If your desktop files disappeared after you turned off OneDrive sync, don’t worry: they are still on your PC. Go to your OneDrive folder and move the files back, or unlink OneDrive properly to restore them. If you found this guide helpful, share it with others who have the same problem.
