Microsoft released the Windows 11 23H2 update on October 31, 2023, with new features and important bug fixes. If the update is not showing up on your PC yet, don’t worry. In this guide, I show you how to get it from Windows Update and how to install it manually with the official ISO file, without losing your files and apps.
Update (October 2026): Windows 11 23H2 Home and Pro stopped receiving security updates on November 11, 2025. Microsoft’s download page now offers a newer version of Windows 11, and the same steps below install that version. Why is the 23H2 update not showing up?
Microsoft rolls out feature updates gradually, so not every PC gets the update on the first day. Compatibility checks, your region or some settings on your PC can also delay it. If you don’t want to wait, you can install it manually.
Note: This method is for PCs that meet the Windows 11 requirements. If your PC is not supported, see the unsupported PC section at the end of this post.
Before you start
- Check compatibility. Run the PC Health Check app (download button below) to see if your PC supports Windows 11. If it doesn’t, you can’t use this method.
- Back up your data. It is always a good idea to back up your important files before a big system change. Use an external drive, cloud storage or the built-in Windows backup.
- Check your Windows language. Download the ISO in the same language as your installed Windows (for example English (United States)). If the language does not match, the option to keep your files and apps is greyed out. More about that: Why is “Keep personal files and apps” greyed out?
- Windows 11 is 64-bit only. There is no 32-bit version, so you only need the 64-bit (x64) download.
Method 1: Get 23H2 from Windows Update
- Open Settings > Windows Update.
- Turn on Get the latest updates as soon as they’re available.
- Click Check for updates. If the 23H2 update appears, click Download & install.
If Windows Update says the update is not ready for your PC yet, use Method 2.
Method 2: Install 23H2 manually with the official ISO

- Open the official Windows 11 download page with the button above.
- Under Download Windows 11 Disk Image (ISO), select Windows 11 (multi-edition ISO) and click Download Now.
- Select the same product language as your installed Windows (you can see it in Settings > Time & language), click Confirm and then click the 64-bit download button.
- When the download is finished, right-click the ISO file and select Mount. If you can’t mount it, extract it with WinRAR or 7-Zip instead.
- Open the mounted drive (or the extracted folder) and double-click setup.exe. Click Yes when Windows asks for permission.
- Click Change how Setup downloads updates, select Not right now and click Next.
- Accept the license terms and make sure Keep personal files and apps is selected.
- Click Install. Your PC restarts several times, so take a coffee break while Windows installs.
When the installation is finished, press Win + R, type winver and press Enter. You should see Version 23H2. Now you can explore the new features and fixes.
